Materia Medica is not just about remembering symptoms, keynotes, or remedy pictures. It is about developing a deeper understanding of a remedy—recognising its distinctive patterns and being able to see them come alive in the patient.

Remedies with Rajan (RWR) is an ongoing HOPE series featuring Dr Rajan Sankaran, where remedies are explored across a spectrum of understanding—from the foundations of classical Homoeopathy to the evolving concepts that have emerged through Dr Sankaran's decades of clinical experience, observation and research.

A Remedy, Explored Through Multiple Dimensions

The journey begins with the case—understanding the patient's symptoms and experiences, using the repertory to identify the relevant rubrics, and arriving at possible remedies through the principles of classical Homoeopathy.

The remedy is then explored through classical Materia Medica, building a strong foundation in its characteristic symptoms, themes, expressions, and traditional understanding.

From this foundation, the exploration moves into newer dimensions of understanding developed through Dr Sankaran's work:

• Sensation — looking beyond the patient's narrative to recognise the deeper experience expressed in the case.
• Kingdom — understanding patterns that help reveal whether the patient's experience reflects the plant, animal or mineral kingdom.
• Miasms — exploring the pace, intensity and underlying pattern of the patient's experience.
• Superclass — recognising broader patterns within remedies that can add another layer of differentiation and understanding.

In this way, each remedy is studied from the known to the newer, from the classical to the evolving—allowing practitioners to see how different perspectives can come together to create a richer and more clinically meaningful understanding of a remedy.

Building Upon the Classical

RWR does not seek to replace classical Materia Medica. It builds upon it.

The repertory and classical Materia Medica provide the foundation. The newer concepts offer additional ways of looking at the same remedy, helping practitioners explore its deeper patterns and recognise its expression more clearly in the patient.

The aim is to move from simply knowing a remedy to recognising, understanding and experiencing the remedy as a living picture.
